The Evening with Peter Driver, organised by Clopton Heritage Project, was a very enjoyable and successful evening. Peter gave a talk and slide show entitled "It's a grave business", a light-hearted look at the history of tombs and gravestones. Amongst other things we learned that children depicted on tombstones carrying skulls were those that had died in childhood; and a knight whose coronet is depicted at his knee (rather than on his head) was a traitor when alive. Peter had many slides of tombstones crafted by stonemasons whose mind was obviously not on the job - and several of "recycled" stones where the original owner's name had started to show through. My favourite was the engraving of the skeleton with the very short legs (the mason had run out of room). Peter is a lively and entertaining talker who really knows his subject. Over coffee and biscuits we had the chance to chat to Peter and look at the documents and photos collected by the Clopton Heritage Project. The evening raised £62.00 for E.A.C.H., Peter's chosen charity.
